Insurance & Superbills at Qi Society

(Everything you need to know about acupuncture and your insurance coverage)

Can I Use My HSA or FSA?

Yes, in most cases. The IRS generally treats acupuncture as a qualified medical expense when it is used to treat, manage, or prevent a specific condition, rather than purely for general wellness. We accept HSA and FSA payment directly at the time of your appointment, no reimbursement process required.

A couple of things to know:

  • Some HSA and FSA administrators request a Letter of Medical Necessity, especially if your plan is strict about distinguishing medical treatment from wellness spending. If yours does, let us know and we can help you get what you need

  • Your superbill already includes the diagnosis codes that support medical necessity, which can strengthen your case if your administrator asks questions

A Friendly Year End Reminder for FSA Holders

If you have a Flexible Spending Account, most plans require you to use those funds by the end of the calendar year or lose them, unless your employer offers a grace period into the new year or a small carryover. HSA funds, by contrast, always roll over, so there is no rush there. If you have unused FSA dollars sitting untouched, this is a great time to put them toward a treatment plan or package.

What Is a Superbill?

Even though we are out of network, many patients still get a meaningful portion of their treatment reimbursed using their out of network benefits, and a superbill is how.

Upon request, at the end of each month, Dr. Alexia generates a superbill for you through our patient portal. A superbill is an itemized receipt that includes:

  • The procedural codes for the treatments you received

  • The diagnosis codes relevant to your care

  • Dr. Alexia's National Provider Identification (NPI) number

  • Her professional license information

What Do I Do With My Superbill?

Submit it directly to your insurance company, usually through their member portal. Your plan will process it as an out of network claim and reimburse you directly, based on your specific benefits.

Do You Take My Insurance?

Qi Society is an out of network, cash pay clinic. We do not bill insurance companies directly, which lets us keep full control over your treatment plan, offer evening appointments, and provide options like Signature Supportive Care Sessions that most insurance would not cover anyway.

Which Insurance Companies Cover Acupuncture?

Coverage for acupuncture is improving nationally, but it still depends entirely on your specific employer plan, not just which company issues your card. A few names come up often for patients who have found coverage:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts

  • Harvard Pilgrim and Tufts Health Plan (now both part of Point32Health)

  • Aetna

  • Cigna

  • UnitedHealthcare

None of these guarantee coverage. One employer's plan might include acupuncture and another might not. The best way to know for certain is to call the number on the back of your card and ask specifically about your out of network acupuncture benefit.

Which Path Fits You?
